How this number is calculated

Your estimate is a weighted average of two inputs. Drinking water accounts for roughly sixty per cent of the total, because it is the largest single source of hydrogen most people take in by volume. Food accounts for the remaining forty per cent, weighted across protein source, carbohydrate pattern, cooking fats and fruit intake.

Each answer maps to a published or commonly cited isotope value. Standard ocean water sits near 155 parts per million. Tap water varies with latitude and altitude, generally falling lower inland and higher at the coast. Animal products from pasture raised sources are typically measured below 130 parts per million, while grain fed sources are typically above 140. Fats yield metabolic water at a lower concentration than carbohydrates do.

This is an indicative estimate built from typical values, not a laboratory analysis of your diet or your body. Individual foods vary by region, season and producer. If you want an actual measurement, that requires isotope ratio mass spectrometry on a physical sample.
