Deuterium-Depleted Water Dosage & DDW Dosage Calculator

Deuterium-depleted water (DDW) is often discussed as a way to support metabolic health and as an adjunct in the treatment of some illnesses, such as cancer. If you’ve landed on this page, you’re probably asking a simple question: how much deuterium-depleted water should I drink?

In this article, we summarise some of the key approaches used, including both for general health and for specific serious illnesses like cancer, with reference to the latest research. We also include aconvenient DDW Dilution Calculator.

What “Dosage” Means for Deuterium-Depleted Water

When people say “DDW dosage,” they usually mean one (or more) of these:

  • Daily volume: how many millilitres or litres of DDW to drink per day
  • PPM level: how depleted the water is (for example, lower ppm vs higher ppm)
  • Duration: how long to use DDW before reassessing
  • Schedule: whether to drink DDW all day, only in the morning, or around training

Unlike a supplement label, DDW routines are often personalised. People may start conservatively, track how they feel, and adjust based on lifestyle and budget.

Start With Your Baseline: How Much Water Do You Normally Drink?

Before changing anything, it helps to know your current hydration habits. Many adults aim for roughly 1.5–2.5 litres per day, but needs vary with:

  • Heat and humidity
  • Training volume and sweat rate
  • Body size
  • Diet (higher protein and higher
    salt intake can change thirst)
  • Caffeine and alcohol intake

A practical way to think about DDW is: you’re swapping part (or all) of your usual water intake for a lower-deuterium option.

Deuterium Depletion Dosages Based on Your Individual Circumstances

Below, we list the main methods people use to determine their ideal daily dose based on their needs.

1)“Partial Replacement” (Most Common Starting Point for healthy people and athletes)

Many people who are otherwise healthy but want to improve their metabolic health begin by replacing a portion of their daily water with DDW. This approach is popular because it’s simpler to stick with and usually more affordable than switching 100% of hydration immediately.

Typical structure:

  • Choose a daily DDW amount you can commit to consistently
  • Use regular water for the rest of your hydration
  • Maintain the routine for a set period, then reassess
  • This combines well with the targeted timing of DDW consumption

Targeted timing uses DDW at specific times of day, such as:

  • Morning hydration as an energy boost
  • Around workouts
  • During focused work blocks

Many people find DDW boosts their energy during specific activities, so they choose to drink a bottle at these specific times. Some people prefer this first thing in the morning instead of a caffeinated beverage to start the day.

2) Lowering your body's overall Deuterium Levels, which is more common for serious illnesses and cancer patients.

Below, we discuss 2 methods to dramatically reduce the body's deuterium levels

Method 1

Dr Lanszlo is one of the most well-known specialists in the USA on the use of deuterium-depleted water. Part of his approach is essentially to consume the minimum amount of deuterium every day.

To do this, he follows several steps

  1. Consumes only deuterium-depleted water of 50ppm or lower.
  2. Limit consumption of other beverages that are high in deuterium
  3. Consumes food that is not only low in deuterium but also high in fat, which helps the body create its own metabolic (low deuterium) water.

You can learn more about low-deuterium foods in our blog. Please note that although it is good to limit high-deuterium beverages when consuming DDW, you should never let your body become dehydrated.

This is a simple, effective way that involves less dosage measurement and work.

Method 2

Dr Gabor Somlyai has dedicated his life to studying the effects of DDW on cancer.

For cancer patients, he recommends diluting DDW to a specific ppm and then drinking 1.5-2L of this water per day. His recommendations vary slightly with the type and stage of cancer, but essentially involve starting at a higher ppm and reducing it over time.

Below, we have included a chart of a typical prescription based on his work.

Deuterium Concentration Daily intake Duration of each stage
105 ppm 1.5-2L 2 months
85 ppm 1.5-2L 2 months
65 ppm 1.5-2L 2 months
45 ppm 1.5-2L 2 months
25 ppm 1.5-2L 2 months

Dr Somylai makes some important notes about dosage in his writings

1. For more severe cases, it is better to start with a lower ppm of 65-85ppm

2. 25 ppm is the lowest concentration he recommends. For milder cases and those already in remission, he recommends a maintenance dose of 65 ppm at the same volumes

3. He also strongly suggests the limitation of other beverages high in deuterium and alcohol during treatment. He recommends that 75-80% of daily liquid consumption come from DDW,

4. The patient's body weight will affect the required dose, with larger patients requiring the full 2L of water.

5. DDW consumption should be continued until the patient is in remission, and then it is ideal to continue for several months to years to reduce the risk of recurrence.

6. He also recommends consuming low-deuterium food and believes many of the benefits of the keto diet may be due to its low deuterium content. You can learn more about this in our Deuterium Depleted Food blog.

Both approaches have extensive overlap, so it is best to adopt the approach that most readily works with your specific conditions and that you can stick to.

Many patients who are severely unwell struggle to wait and introduce the higher doses at later dates. Dr Somylai himself emphasises that the patient must have at least 3 months of life expectancy to allow time for the DDW to work. At this stage, there seems to be very little potential downside for those who choose to adopt lower concentrations (ppm) earlier.

If adopting this second method, due to the cost of transportation and storage, it is often more convenient to buy DDW with a very low concentration of deuterium and then dilute it with potable water to the correct level for you. Please see our convenient DDW Dosage calculator below if adopting this approach.

How Long Should You Use DDW Before Reassessing?

If using deuterium depletion to improve metabolic health and energy levels, then it is best to reassess after 1 month. Energy levels may fluctuate during the first week or so as the body adjusts and then improve dramatically after that.

If using DDW as an adjunct for cancer treatment, then blood tests and scans should be taken before commencing treatment and again at 3-monthly intervals.

Dr Somylai notes in his research that blood tests, including tumour markers,
may initially worsen before improving as the body can go through a period of
adjustment.

Practical Tips for Building a DDW Routine That Sticks

Keep the routine simple

If your plan requires constant measuring and complicated rules, it’s less likely to last. A simple daily target (for example, a set number of bottles) is easier.

Plan your weekly volume

Work out how much DDW you’ll need for the week so you don’t run short. This is especially helpful if you live regionally or prefer fewer deliveries.

Store it like premium water

Follow the storage instructions on your product. In general, keep DDW away from heat and direct sunlight.

Don’t ignore electrolytes

If you drink a lot of water (DDW or regular), electrolytes can matter—especially in hot weather or if you train hard. This is not a DDW-specific issue; it’s a hydration issue. Yavelle includes a small quantity of electrolytes in our DDW
to reduce these issues.

Track consistency, not perfection

Missing a day doesn’t mean the routine “failed.” The goal is a pattern you can maintain.

Who Should Be Extra Careful With “Dosage” Questions?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or take prescription medications, it’s smart to speak with a qualified healthcare professional about any major changes to diet or hydration habits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much deuterium-depleted water should I drink per day?

There isn’t a universal dose. Many people start by replacing part of their normal daily water intake with DDW, then adjust based on consistency, lifestyle, and budget. For more serious illnesses, most people use 1.5-2L a day

Can I mix DDW with regular water?

Yes, potable water. Many routines are based on partial replacement, where DDW is used for a set portion of daily hydration.

Should I drink DDW all day or at specific times?

Lower ppm means the water is more depleted, but there’s no standard rule that automatically changes your ideal volume. Many people choose a routine they can maintain and reassess over time.

Does lower ppm mean I need to drink less?

Lower ppm means the water is more depleted, but there’s no standard rule that automatically changes your ideal volume. Many people choose a routine they can maintain and reassess over time.

Can I use DDW tomake my tea or coffee?

Yes, you can, and this can be part of your daily volume. It is best to limit it to a quick boil and then use it straight away, rather than prolonged heating.
